Russia and China have joined efforts in the fight against cancer

On August 19, 2021, National Medical Radiology Research Center (NMMRC) hosted a Russian-Chinese teleconference on the gastric cancer diagnosis and treatment. The event was attended by the heads and leading experts of the NMRRC and the Peking University Cancer Hospital. This significant event was held as a part of signed Agreement on Cooperation in oncology between two Centers.
During the virtual meeting, Chinese and Russian experts discussed promising areas and technologies of complex and combined gastric cancer treatment, exchanged experiences and made proposals for further cooperation. Such joint work is of particular interest to both countries.
The fact is that both Centers have not only accumulated one of the world's largest experiences in the treatment of this type of malignant tumors but also developed and implemented into clinical practice new unique technologies.
Totally laparoscopic surgical treatment for adenocarcinoma of esophagogastric junction or HIPEC and PIPAC technologies are one of such kind of achievements.
The team of Chinese specialists was headed by the President and Chief Physician of the Peking University Cancer Hospital, Professor Jiafu Ji, who is internationally recognized for his expertise in surgical treatment for gastric cancer and related basic and clinical researches. Professor Ji is leading the effort to promote standardization of gastric cancer surgery in China. Professor Ji is well known as the first Chinese expert to become the Chairman of the International Gastric Cancer Society, he initiated the China Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery Union and took the lead in constructing the biggest cancer biobank in China, which has collected samples of more than 11,000 cases of the disease around the country.
Gastric cancer treatment technologies, currently used in the NMRRC, are also of particular interest to the Chinese specialists. The NMRRC has a wealth of clinical experience that allows it to perform unique operations in complex clinical situations, including operations for locally advanced tumors, for local recurrence of malignant tumors and distant metastases, as well as reoperations after trial or non-radical interventions. The NMRRC-based Center for the Treatment of Patients with Peritoneal Carcinomatosis applies unique HIPEC (Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) and PIPAC ( Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy) therapy technologies.
To remain at the forefront of oncology, two Centers are constantly seeking opportunities for domestic and international academic exchange and collaboration.
Opening the teleconference, NMRRC Director General, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrey KAPRIN emphasized: “We see the desire of Chinese partners to cooperate with our Center and it’s experts, and acquaint with our technologies. It is a great honor for us to be a part of such high-level discussion. Oncology is the science of the eternal fight against cancer and I thank our colleagues for such an initiative. "
